Cigar Tips from Stogie Guys

I'll put their posting here as well as a link to their site. These guys are always a great read and have excellent insight into the world of cigars. Enjoy.

Passing along pointers to novice cigar smokers is one of our major goals at StogieGuys.com. So, with that in mind, here are a few more tips to help you enjoy this beloved hobby even more.

  • No stubbing! Absolutely, positively, do not put your premium cigar out as you would a cigarette. It will release a mass of foul odors and unpleasant smoke. Always, repeat, always, let cigars die peacefully on their own. Premium cigars are pure tobacco and, unlike cigarettes or most machine-made cigars, will not burn on their own.
  • Carrying a torch. Some torch lighters are incredibly hot, particularly multi-jet and tabletop models. Occasionally, I’ll fire one up and think I should be wearing a welder’s helmet. Ponder for a moment what all that heat is doing to the cigar. It’s burning it nearly like the surface of the sun. Now, there’s nothing wrong with torch lighters. Just be careful and use the farthest reaches of the flame to ignite your cigar. You just want to light it, not charbroil it.
  • White ash. You’ll undoubtedly hear it said that a white ash is the sign of a good cigar. Well, tobacco people tell me that isn’t true. The color of the ash, they say, is mainly just a reflection of the minerals, salts, and chemical compounds absorbed by the tobacco from its soil. Some Cuban cigars, though by no means all, have very white ashes and that may be the origin of this belief.
Definitely good tips in both the text and the links above. Check them out.

On another note, I have a cigar review due this Wednesday. It's a great cigar and am looking forward to posting it. Also have what is looking to be a great combo gig this Saturday in downtown Belleville. We're hoping to see a good crowd and make some music in the process. More on that soon.

Day #1 in Vegas

The plan was to get up at the alarm at 5:30AM with plenty of time to get to the airport and get checked in. That didn't happen as planned...it was more like wake up at 6:30AM and rush to get out the door for an 8:10AM flight, which in fact we did make. The flight itself was fine; a few bumps near the end and a sore back were the only complaints. Getting to the hotel was an adventure in itself. The shuttle driver may in fact be a Nascar driver. Sharp turns in the down-pouring rain, cutting other drivers off...I was actually proud; my wife was not.

Getting into the hotel way before normal check-in hours, we paid a small per night fee and got upgraded to the next size room. Very sweet room, which I plan on posting some pics of later on.

Caesars is huge. A map doesn't really do it justice. All the walking allowed to burn some of our lunch from Mesa Grill off. And the folks at the Casa Fuente club are always welcoming. The Fuente Fuente Opus X is always a nice treat to relax with, along with a few Cuban-inspired drinks.

We're off to find some sushi and hit up the Shadow Bar tonight. Should be fun.

What you have stumbled upon is the random brain activity that takes the form of a guy who does IT/computer work during the day and is a freelance trombonist in the evenings.

You may not understand the brevity of what you could be getting into in reading this blog. Do you really want to listen to the ramblings of someone who has to deal with people's computer/printer/internet problems all day? And everyone knows what they say about trombone players...

You may find the random thoughts venture toward cigar reviews, writing, music, anything and everything Apple, productivity (or the lack thereof), South Park...the list could go on. You've been warned...
